Termination of graphene edges created by hydrogen and deuterium plasmas

چکیده
Edge engineering is important for both fundamental research and applications as the device size decreases to nanometer scale. This especially case graphene because a edge shows totally different electronic properties depending on atomic structure termination. It has recently been shown that an atomically precise zigzag can be obtained by etching graphite using hydrogen (H) plasma. However, termination had not studied directly. In this study, of edges created H-plasma high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy show sp2 bonded carbon atom terminated only one H atom. suggests ideal edge, which but also bonding, etching. Etching surface with plasma isotope, deuterium (D), scanning tunneling microscopy D-plasma anisotropically etches less efficiently, although it make defects more than H-plasma.

Selective etching of graphene edges by hydrogen plasma.
We devised a controlled hydrogen plasma reaction at 300 °C to etch graphene and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) selectively at the edges over the basal plane. Atomic force microscope imaging showed that the etching rates for single-layer and few-layer (≥2 layers) graphene are 0.27 ± 0.05 nm/min and 0.10 ± 0.03 nm/min, respectively. Meanwhile, Raman spectroscopic mapping revealed no D band in the pl...
متن کاملImproved confinement produced by ion Bernstein waves in hydrogen and deuterium plasmas of FTU
New experiments with the ion Bernstein waves (IBWs) have been performed in the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU) both in hydrogen and deuterium plasmas at higher power level, operation at higher density, higher plasma current and lower effective ion charge values than in the previous campaign. Improved confinement in a region with larger radius is obtained when operating in deuterium. Transport an...
متن کاملHydrogen adsorption by g-C3N4 and graphene oxide nanosheets
The adsorption behavior of hydrogen for synthesized graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and graphene oxide nanosheets was compared. The structure of the prepared g-C3N4 and graphene oxide samples were studied using TEM, FT-IR spectroscopy and surface area analysis. Textural results of the prepared nanosheets show that the surface area, total pore volume, and average internal diameter of g-C3N4 an...
متن کاملTransport properties of dense deuterium-tritium plasmas.
Consistent descriptions of the equation of states and information about the transport coefficients of the deuterium-tritium mixture are demonstrated through quantum molecular dynamic (QMD) simulations (up to a density of 600 g/cm(3) and a temperature of 10(4) eV). Diffusion coefficients and viscosity are compared to the one-component plasma model in different regimes from the strong coupled to ...
متن کاملLow-energy termination of graphene edges via the formation of narrow nanotubes.
We demonstrate that free graphene sheet edges can curl back on themselves, reconstructing as nanotubes. This results in lower formation energies than any other nonfunctionalized edge structure reported to date in the literature. We determine the critical tube size and formation barrier and compare with density functional simulations of other edge terminations including a new reconstructed Klein...
